Alchemy and Magic
I love the alchemical nature of cooking which is really a form of magic. A whole bunch of disparate objects can be cooked up to make something splendiferous, delicious and new. Just raid your fridge and dream up the new possibilities:
Old shrivelled tomato + half an onion + 2 eggs + mushrooms = Delicious omlette
2 weeks old broccoli + spices + onion + potato mash from yesterday =
Marvellous broccoli soup
Half a tin of pasta sauce + Goats Cheese + Basil leaves + left over pepper curry = Spicy pasta sauce
Good food
I have become simply obsessed with cooking and good food. What is the point of spending a tonne of money on beauty products, when healthy, glowing skin and hair comes mainly from the food we eat? There is a massive industry out there waiting to sell us an “innovative” new product, when the ancient art of eating well should suffice.
Good habits
Cooking is really about habit. At the beginning of this year I was taking a career break, and developed my passion for cooking. Now that I am working, I can hit the kitchen after work even when I’m tired.
Fried Chicken and Chips
I really don’t think it’s that expensive to buy and cook good food. In East London, I marvel at the range of nasty fried chicken and chips shops on the high streets. £2.50 may look like a cheap option, but if you’re buying that 3-4 days a week then it’s still overall cheaper to buy groceries and cook your meals and take packed lunch to work. I can make a packed lunch in a mere 5 mins. I advise you to walk outside those chicken and chips shops at 9am and smell the rancid oil…
Packed lunches
Buying lunch in central London really is breaking the bank and I don’t even enjoy the food. Why buy a chicken salad with a mangy portion, when I can prepare one for myself, and add healthy, generous portions? I’ve also recently re-discovered thermos flasks and am looking forward to enjoying hot tea in the park…£2 for a hot drink every day is not pretty – you do the maths.
